Smerinthus ocellata, the "Eyed Hawk-Moth" or "Sphinx demi-Paon", from the Sphingidae family.
Ex larva
It was born today 8 may 2008, after overwintering as a pupa :-)

At rest, it looks like a dead leaf but when disturbed it shows the "eyes" on its hindwings. Then, birds are frightened and go away... It's a rather common moth here but it's not seen very often because it flies in the middle of the night, around 1:00 am. Anyway, it's beautiful and very easy to breed :-)

wow! that's fascinating. i wonder if there are alot of moths that come out of night. moths have always sort of freaked me out ever since i saw 'Silence of the Lambs' :D
